Hundreds of bus stops in Utrecht, the Netherlands, have been covered with plants in recent months in an effort to improve biodiversity, community air quality and help bees.

Utrecht has 316 bus stops, at the moment, covered with Sedum plants. And at another 96 stops solar panels have also been installed. The energy they generate feeds the digital screen that shows information at the bus stop.

Sustainability has become more and more the focus in recent years in everything they do in Utrecht.

As a result, RBL Outdoor was able to transform approximately 75% of the city’s bus stops into a haven for bees and other insects. Although plants also have other environmental benefits.

The installation of the plants costs 1,300 euros, in addition to 300 euros per year for maintenance. Its useful life is 20 years, as long as it has the correct maintenance.
